The house of Papa Wemba has been turned into a museum.

On the sixth anniversary of his death, the Kinshasa home of Congolese rumba star Papa Wemba was officially inaugurated as a museum.

People may come and listen to music and see images and videos of the Congolese star while touring the property, Culture Minister Catherine Kathungu said at the inauguration ceremony.

According to a tweet from her ministry, the mansion, which is now owned by the government, will also hold exhibitions and conferences.

Papa Wemba died in Ivory Coast in 2016 at the age of 66 after fainting during a concert.

He was seen slumped on stage behind a group of dancers on video from the performance before they rushed to his aid.

Wemba, whose true name was Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, began his singing career in religious choirs after he was born in 1949.

He contributed to the modernization of Congolese rumba music, with the resulting genre, soukous, impacting music across Africa.

The United Nations' cultural organization included rumba to its list of intangible cultural heritage objects last year.
