International Firefighters Day Observed in Northern Region

International Firefighters Day in commemoration of the service falling heroes

The Northern Regional Ghana fire Service have observed this year's International Firefighters Day in commemoration of the service falling heroes.

As part of the celebration, the Regional command led its personnel through some principal streets in Tamale for body fitness and to create awareness of the significance of the day.

Assistant Chief Officer grade-one (ACFOI), James Ankrah, the Northern Regional commander of the service told Journalists that, every 4th May is set aside to herald the immense contributions of firefighters world wide.

“The main purpose of this gathering is to recognize, appreciate and honour all fire officers including our fallen heroes and their families, for their dedication, commitment and selfless sacrifices always displayed to keep our country safe”.

He bemoaned that many of their personnel have become victims in an attempt to save lives and property.

“On December 2, 1998, a tragic event shook the Linton Community, Australia and the world. Firefighters in Linto, Australia, a populated region in Victoria, were fighting a large bush fire and called for mutual aid. This urgent mutual aid call brought the Geelong West fire brigade Verdeveldt, Chris Evants, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Mathew Armstrong all loaded into company's truck. They were part of a strike team and were being sent to help extinguished the flames. As the five headed into the hot zone, the wind suddenly switched direction, engulfing the truck in flames and killing all the members. This unfortunate incident is what  inspired JJ Edmonson to bring about an international holiday”.

ACFOI James advised the gathering to use their knowledge to educate their family and church members on measures to prevent fire.

Back in Ghana, the commander recognized and honoured the likes of DOII Sedor, ADII Joseph Baidoo, GOII Hannah Yawson and Sub-officer Isaac Newton who died inline of duty.

He further commended personnel of the Ghana fire Service of their commitment to work.
