International Children’s Day: Bono Director of Children blames poor performance of lack of resources

The Bono Regional Director of Children under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, George Yaw Ankama is blaming his office’s inability to eradicate Child Labour and other child-related violence on lack of resources.

He said, his office lacks the needed resources to embark on campaigns and advocacies hence their inability to function.

World Day against Child Labour aims to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.

Each year on 12 June, World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them. This international day was launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) says despite Ghana’s strong policies in putting an end to Child Labour in Ghana, one out of every ten children in the country is still engaged in the worst forms of labour.

According to Joseph Whittal, the Commissioner, the situation has worsened following the advent of the coronavirus and its attendant lockdowns and school closures. This was disclosed by CHRAJ in a press release to mark this year’s World Day against Child Labour.

The Bono Regional Director for the Department of Children Mr George Yaw Ankamah wants the government to ensure proper distribution of budget allocation to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
