Sarkodie has revealed that he is strict on royalties because he intends to leave a legacy for his family when he is gone.

According to him, meticulous steps are constantly taken to make sure the right process is passed so that the accurate amount that he or anyone in his family is entitled to will get to them.

Using his new single 'Coachella' as an example, he explained that the song features a line from George Darko’s Odo colour but since all the due processes were followed there would be no misunderstandings concerning who is entitled to what in the future.

Only people who don't go through the right processes can be regarded as song thieves and he has notified all the necessary authorities before using the line.

He explained that he would expect the same treatment if anybody decides to use his work.

“You have to seek the consent of whoever owns the right to the music. that is the same way that I would like to be treated. Even when I am old or gone, I would want my Titi and MJ to get some credit or revenue from people trying to use my work.”

This he said while speaking with Giovani Caleb on 3FM Drive.

He further admitted that would not have done the right thing when he started his career since he was not aware of the business side of the music industry.

Now that he knows, he realises that artists have to seek consent and follow the terms and requirements before they can use the works of others.

“And that is exactly what we did with Odo Colour. Big shouts to Daddy George Darko for making it smooth for us. We had a conversation. And he had his credit on as a writer, because that line was written by him. And that is the best way to go about it. ”
