Harris in Africa: Zambia warns against anti-gay protest

The opposition in Zambia has been cautioned not to stage anti-gay rights demonstrations while US Vice-President Kamala Harris is in the nation.

Protests are planned by the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) party in advance of the democracy conference, which will be held in the capital city of Lusaka.

Ms. Harris is slated to speak at the summit, which is being co-hosted by Zambia, the US, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and South Korea, when she arrives in the southern African nation on Friday.

Without providing any supporting proof, about 50 opposition MPs have asserted that the event is a part of a plan to force gay rights on Zambians.

Amnesty International Zambia has urged the administration to strongly back LGBTQ rights and make sure the summit is not interfered with.

According to Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu, the government will not tolerate lawlessness during the meeting.

In reaction to the potential for protests, President Hakainde Hichilema has urged restraint and communication.

Mr. Hichilema vowed earlier this month to uphold Zambia's anti-homosexuality legislation.

He asserted that it is untrue to state that his government supports gay rights.

Prior to traveling to Zambia on Friday, Ms. Harris is scheduled to tour Tanzania on Wednesday.
