GAF explains why soldiers were deployed to Banda, after clash with Asiedu Nketia

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has given reasons for deploying military personnel to the Banda area for the last phase of the mass voters registration exercise.

According to the GAF, in a statement, the deployment followed a request by the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

It explained that, the move had become necessary because the two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were bussing [transporting] people in their numbers to register and that had earlier resulted in a clash which led to the death of one person.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah was seen in a video on social media ‘clashing’ with military over their interference in the registration process.

The soldiers, according to him, were intimidating residents participating in the ongoing mass voter registration exercise.

However, the statement from GAF explained that the security agencies were available to support the REGSEC-brokered Agreement.

The GAF said ‘no specific ethnic group was targeted in this regard’ and that, the general public should disregard the allegations.
