Freed Kenyan cleric refuses to leave jail

Despite being acquitted of terrorism charges, a Muslim preacher has begged a Kenyan court not to let him out of prison.

Sheikh Guyo Gorsa Buru was detained in northern Kenya in January 2018 on charges of possessing terrorist propaganda and assisting with the al-Shabab extremist group.

However, the court discharged him this week, stating that the state had failed to prove its case.

He, on the other hand, refused to leave the notorious Kamiti prison, claiming that he was in danger.

Once he is free, the cleric claims he will be abducted and killed by the state.

He could only stay in prison for a maximum of 30 days before being released, according to the chief magistrate.

He must, however, reimburse the government for his time at the facility.

Mr. Buru has filed a separate case at the high court, requesting state protection whenever he is released.

His case has rekindled the discussion in Kenya concerning enforced disappearances.

According to a recent report by Amnesty International and other human rights organizations, police violence, extrajudicial executions, and abductions have increased in Kenya. The allegations are denied by the police.

In the coastal city of Mombasa, Muslim cleric Ibrahim Rogo Omar was shot and killed in 2013.
