Tundu Lissu, a previous contender for president of Tanzania, is anticipated to leave his exile in Belgium on Wednesday and return home.

After the government recently removed a prohibition on political demonstrations, the opposition leader returns home and is scheduled to address supporters later this afternoon.

Only elected officials were permitted to hold demonstrations in their districts under the restriction, which former president John Magufuli enforced in 2016.

Mr. Lissu, who was the target of a 16-shot assassination attempt in 2017 in the nation's capital of Dodoma, has spent the most of the intervening years in Belgium.

After that, he briefly resurfaced in 2020 to run against Mr. Magufuli in a presidential contest in which he received only 13% of the vote.

His Chadema party disapproved of the result due to significant alleged irregularities.
