The minister explained that the volumes of timber exports were a result of the decline in the value-added over the years. As such, he said the number of large timber processing companions dropped from 60 in 2000 to 10 in 2016 and has remained so to date.

A total of Five Hundred and Sixty-Six thousand, six hundred and thirteen point two nine cubic meres of timber worth over two hundred and sixty-six million Euros (€266, 000,000) has been exported from Ghana between 2019 and 2020, Lands and Natural resources Minister, Honourable Samuel Abdulai Jinapor has disclosed.

HonorableJinapor made the disclosure answering questions on the floor of parliament on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, regarding the status of timber business in Ghana.

Also, he added about 248,657.909metre cubic meters worth over One Hundred and thirteen million euros of timber worth over one hundred and thirteen million euros (Euro €113,000,000) has been exported with domestic trade in the wood species being three hundred and ninety-two thousand, one hundred and seventeen point seven five cubic metrics have been exported with domestic trade in the wood species.

The minister explained that the volumes of timber exporters were a result of the decline in the value-added over the years.
As such, he said the number of large timber processing companions dropped from 60 in 2000 to 10 in 2016 and has remained so that however was optimistic of greater investment in terms of value addition in the timber industry.

To reverse the trend, the minister the declining trend in the domestic timber industry,  the minister disclosed that his outfit has instituted a technical team made of industry players and experts from the Forestry Commission Commission to develop a comprehensive strategy to revamp the timber industry.

He noted that the committee has made a commendation to him for short, medium, and long-term measures in a bid to make the Industry more viable and vibrant.

Amongst the recommendations were improving raw material and inputs supply base including investment in commercial plantation development, increasing manpower development and training for the timber industry to move into value-added processing, 

Other are financing for industrial development and retooling to be able to process small diameter logs, technology, innovation, research and development for industry processing and use of lesser used timber species, developing standards for wood processing, and improving law enforcement.
