Toffees celebrate Sigurdsson's penalty

Chelsea's nine-game unbeaten run in the league was ended by Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at the Goodison Park on Saturday night.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s goal from the spot ensured that Chelsea were unable to leapfrog Tottenham and Liverpool into first for third.

Chelsea had the game's first corner but it was a poor one from Mount, who was flagged offside as the ball was recycled again back to the right-hand side.

The intensity kept progressing as both teams searched for the opener.  Everton were determined to prevent Chelsea from playing as Sigurdsson held back Kovacic. A poor ball from Havertz kept James and allowed Richarlison to snap in to the tackle.

James and Werner in the 12-minute combined before Doucoure was alerted to the danger as his back pass was thrashed clear by Pickford.

The hosts were awarded a penalty after a foul on Calvert Lewin. A long pump by Pickford was won in the air by Calvert-Lewin, who was then wiped out by Mendy and John Moss pointed to the penalty spot.

It was a nice cool from Gylfi Sigurdsson who calmly slotted the ball to the left of Mendy, sending the Chelsea goalkeeper the wrong way. The Toffees are one up.

The visitors pressured the Toffees and Reece James hit the post after Everton struggled to clear a corner. The ball came out to right-back and his thunderous strike hit the foot of the post.

Chelsea continued to force the issue as Kovacic's cross towards Giroud was headed out by Keane. Then Iwobi showed good awareness to let the ball run across his body to clear his lines.

Another wave came down the Everton left but Mount was too deep and the ball went out for a goal-kick.

Chelsea came close to levelling the scores two minutes in the second half – Thiago Silva’s long ball was punched clear by Pickford. Kante teed up Mount with Pickford off his line but the ball was clipped onto the top of the bar. The hosts continued to defend well as Havertz and James combined down the right before Giroud's cross was headed behind by Holgate.

Calvert Lewin won another penalty for the Toffees in the 63-minute after the forward was wiped by Ben Chilwell in the box. VAR’s review indicated that Calvert Lewin was offside before Iwobi involved him upfront.

It was tough for Chelsea to break the visitors' defence following their resilient shield and tackling.

Mount almost equalized through a free-kick just near the yard line with few minutes to finish the match. The midfielder went for the far post and he clearly wrong-footed Pickford, who was beaten but had the post to his rescue.
