Fernandes and Rodri challenges for ball in the Manchester derby

The 183 rd Manchester derby ended goalless at Old Trafford as the two sides shared the points.

It means United are seventh on 20 points, a place and a point above City.

Paul Pogba started as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintained his diamond formation. David de Gea kept his place in goal, Luke Shaw started with Alex Telles on the bench, and Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial remained on the bench, with Edinson Cavani absent.

John Stones replaced Aymeric Laporte who was unwell to start at Old Trafford. Fernandinho captained the team taking the place of Ikay Gundogan, and Kyle Walker returned for Benjamin Mendy

It was a steady start from both sides with both defences taken risks in the early minutes.

Greenwood in the 11-minute created an opportunity for the hosts' first goal when he slipped in Fernandes, who gave it to Pogba at the centre. He lifted a beauty into the box for Fernandes in space, and the ball was cleared for a corner.

Shaw's corner was flicked on by Lindelof, with City completely flat-footed. McTominay run from the far post and looked to latch onto it, but he was half a second too late, missing the ball for a goal kick.

The game looked like it was finding rhythm, but many of the balls were controlled in midfield with each team showing respect for the other.

City was presented with a real chance I the 21-minute when Sterling played a one-two with De Bruyne, who found him brilliantly on the left of the box.

Sterling danced on it and Wan-Bissaka swelled himself. As Sterling shot low from 10 yards with bodies in front of him, Maguire got a desperate block in.

United looked promising on the ball in midfield - on three occasions interchanging to get the ball up the pitch, releasing Rashford, but the final bite in the final third has been missing.

The second half followed suit – both teams were too careful to be exposed at the back and hanged on to possession but located attackers with long balls whenever there was a chance.

Rashford was awarded a penalty four minutes in the half when Walker came across, kicked his foot, and referee Kavanagh gave a penalty. However, VAR looked into it and Rashford was confirmed offside before the foul in the yard.

United finally tested Ederson to record a shot on target in the 89-minute. Fernandes controlled the ball on the edge and it bounced up nicely for him on the half volley, but his effort was straight at Ederson.

The game ended goalless with United's run of wins in the PL stops at four. City's stops at five.
