Electoral commission's Office in Accra gutted by fire

The Electoral Commission’s (EC) office at Sapeiman in the Ga West Municipality has been destroyed by fire.

The fire reportedly started at 2.30 am on August 14, 2020, and the building which serves as the Regional Office of the election management body has been destroyed.

The fire however did not affect the main administration block.

According to the police, they immediately informed the Ghana National Fire Service about the outbreak after they received the information.

Four fire tenders from Amasaman, Kotoku, Nsawam and Abelemkpe were brought onto the scene to quench the fire and provide security according to a statement from the Ghana Police Service.

“The Greater Accra Regional Director of Commission, Mr. Kwame Amoah informed the Regional Police Commander DCOP Mr. Afful Boakye Yiadom who was at the scene that the fire will not affect the recent registration and the upcoming December 2020 elections,” the statement added.

The cause of the incident is unknown, and still under investigation by the Fire Service.

The fire was finally brought under control at about 5:00 am.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known.

There was no casualty.
