Arsenal are through to the quarter-finals of the English League Cup after winning 4-5 on penalties at Anfield.

It is the Reds fourth loss in their last six penalty shootouts in all competitions, including two to Arsenal this season (also in the Community Shield).

The game ended goalless in full time after both sides were unable to hit the net, recording limited shots on target.

The Gunners began the game on the high note and tried to frustrate the Liverpool midfield with long and through balls but the backline commanded by Virgil van Dijk was in check and made the offside trap active.

Adrian was called to work in the 7-minute when Pepe was released down the left - with Liverpool's high line just unable to match the Ivorian for pace and Neco Williams miles off. He got into the box and found Ceballos, who fed an unmarked and seemingly onside Nketiah on the edge of the six-yard area before the Reds keeper intervened, blasting the ball over.

The visitors marked the Reds actively releasing every player behind the ball when Liverpool is in possession.

Minamino was close to giving the Reds the lead in the 45-minute after the ball was delivered from the woodwork into the box towards Jota, who got a big header in from a tight angle which was pushed away by Leno. His punch was straight into Minamino who didn’t have much time to react only to strike the bar from eight yards.

Jota justified what Liverpool have invested in him in the second half when he got flying forward with the ball at his feet. He moved in from the left channel and leathered a shot goalwards from 25 yards but it took a touch on its way behind for a corner which was defended by the Gunners.

Van Dijk and Salah were subbed for Origi and Gomez as Elneny replaced Danny Ceballos.

Patient build-up from Liverpool as Wijnaldum brought Neco Williams onto the ball down the right. He had Minamino in support but he hit it from range forcing a very comfortable save from Leno.

Cedric was booked in the closing stages as Liverpool's appeal for a handball against Gabriel fell on deaf ears.

The game ended and was to be decided by penalty shootout.

Milner, Wijnaldum, Minamino and Jones scored for Liverpool but two misses from Origi and Wilson ended the Reds journey.

Lacazette, Cedric, Maitland Niles, Pepe and Willock scored for Arsenal as Elneny’s miss was the only blunder for the Gunners.

They qualified 4-5 on penalties.
