Ed Woodward will step down as Manchester United's executive vice-chairman, talksPORTS reports.

The 49-year-old will vacate the top operational role in the Old Trafford boardroom at the end of 2021.

It comes amid huge controversy surrounding the club's involvement in the proposed European Super League.

Woodward's association with the Red Devils began in 2005 when he acted as an adviser to help the Glazers buy the club.

There have been suggestions he was not consulted about United's plans to become one of the breakaway division's founding members, which was set to have Manchester United owner Joel Glazer as a vice-chairman.

The European Super League, which proposed United and 11 other 'leading' European clubs would always compete and never face relegation, is now off after widespread protests among football fans.
