Financial Secretary of Afia Kobi Market, Mr. Charles Addo has explained that the enforcement of firm measures to guide market women on the need to maintain social distancing, wash hands with soap under running water and the application of alcohol based sanitizers is the impulse behind discipline at the market.

According to him, education played a key role before the needed laws were obligatory in the fight against coronavirus at the Afia Kobi Market. He commended the traders for their admiration and called on them to keep up with the good attitude.

“We saw that the coronavirus is not a joke so the leaders took precautionary measures. Our task force were educated to ensure that the social distancing order was effected in order to curb the spread of the virus in the market,” he said.

The Afia Kobi market has been adjudged as the most discipline-selling place in the Kumasi Metropolis in such a shattering season. Strict rules have been put in place to make sure that the directives of the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Ghana Health Service are observed to help shield lives whiles activities are conducted.

People who enter the market place without nose or face masks are banned and women without sanitizers are also encouraged to purchase some for use, which they easily heed.

Mr. Charles Addo explained that failure to recognize the harm coronavirus can cause people sometimes attributes to minor attention which at the long run cause detrimental episodes regardless of one’s integrity and uprightness. He advised Ghanaians to be vigilant and observe the needed by-laws put in place to protect lives.

Unlike other markets where congestion has become a challenge and social distancing directives flouted, many tables designed for traders at the Afia Kobi market are without sellers, leaving the place airy and half occupied with business activities not as active as it used to before the pandemic befell.

The financial secretary clarified that market has been hit by the sudden appearance of the pandemic with lesser patronage to sales whiles other stores lies unoccupied by traders since the lock down was lifted by government. He disclosed that authorities are putting up measures to permit traders who are willing to occupy them.

“Those who are ready will soon occupy the stores so we are expecting no one to blame the authorities when the decision is been effected. The attendance is very low and it’s really affecting us. Harassment from any trader whose space will be occupied by another will not be entertained at all,” he added.

Traders at the Afia Kobi Market expressed unhappiness at the recent turn of events and pleaded to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to restraint people from selling by the roadside, which averts consumers from walking to the market to patronize trades and contributes to the easy spread of COVID-19.

“Many people are selling by the roadside which easily creates congestion and promotes the status of coronavirus whiles there are enough space for no one to occupy. KMA should try and prevent all those traders to enable our customers contribute to purchases,” Faustina Obeng, a trader spoke.

Ghana as at Sunday had recorded 4,700 coronavirus cases with 494 recoveries and 22 Deaths.
