COVID-19: Seven Schools in Accra Record 62 cases – Education Director

Some seven schools in the Greater Accra Region have recorded 62 cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Madam Monica Ankrah has revealed

She disclosed this to the media during a disinfection exercise at the Accra Girls Senior High School – where 55 persons have contracted the disease - on Thursday, July 16, 2020.

According to Madam Ankrah, authorities have taken steps to reduce the incidence of COVID-19 spread within the schools.

“Sometimes when we suspect a case, the impression that is created is that they are all positive cases. But by the grace of God, in the Greater Accra Region, we have 62 cases in seven schools and they have all recovered except about two. But we have given them all they need including sanitizers, nose masks, etc”.

The disinfection exercise was undertaken by Zoomlion Ghana Limited in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile, calls for closure of schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic has gained steam, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) blaming the government for the spike in cases.

The National Parent Teacher Associations have also called on the Akufo-Addo government to close schools and test all students for the virus.

The government has however maintained that calls for closure of schools are still premature.

The Ghana Education Service, has, for instance, noted that closing schools and allowing students home, will rather lead to further spread of the disease.

The Deputy Health Minister, Okoe Boye has also said, the schools might be the 'safest' place for the students.

The Deputy Minister said the government will put in place measures to effectively manage the situation.
