Committee submit report on the death cause of KNUST SHS student

The Ashanti Regional Minister received the report which will be forwarded to the Minister of Education.

The five-member committee set to inquire about the death of a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School have submitted their report to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah on Thursday, August 6, 2020.

The late Sam Leonard Richard speculated to have suffered stomach complications was left unguarded by teachers which later resulted in his death. This sparked protests in the school by students towards the unconcern attitudes of the school staff.

 

 

“An incident occurred at KNUST SHS where a student lost his life,” The said at a press conference in Kumasi on Thursday, August 6, 2020.

“As a result, there was a need to conduct investigations into the issues that led to the sudden demise of the student. As a result, a three-member committee was formed with a secretary provided and later we added a recorder,” he added.

The committee was chaired by Justice Obeng Diawuo and included the Regional Bureau for National Investigations (BNI) Mr. David Adu Osei and a former headmaster of T I Ahmadiya High school, Mr. Yussif Kobina Agyare.

 

 

Hon Simon Osei Mensah addressed that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) nominated Mr. Poku Ababio as secretary and Mad. Janitor Amponsah was appointed as the recorder to support the committee.

“The committee have now completed its work and is here this morning to submit the report to me for onward transmission to the Minister of Education.

“The basis for the composite of the committee is in section 188 of the local governance Act (Act 926) and also the Security and intelligence Act which gives power to the Regional Security Council to also conduct investigations into such things when some security issues are issues are involved,” he updated.

 

 

Justice Obeng Diawuo addressed that the report “represents in our opinion the fair representation to all the facts leading to the unfortunate incident that occurred on the 6th July 2020 at the KNUST Secondary School leading to the unfortunate demise of the late Sam Leonard Richard.”

He, on behalf of the committee, acknowledged the RCC for their immense backing towards the investigations.

“We are grateful for the confidence imposed in us. We on our part have tried our best to come out with this report within the stipulated time.

“We wish to thank the regional coordinating council for the support that was extended to us throughout our deliberations and to all the witnesses we invited. They were very cooperative and assisted us in all our deliberations.”
