The leadership of the Concerned Drivers Union has expressed displeasure with the directive from transport operators to reduce transport fares by 10 percent.

Yesterday, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in collaboration with other primary stakeholders in the transport sector agreed to a 10-percent reduction in fares.

However, the reduction will take effect from August 1, theNational Chairman of the GPRTU, Mr Kwame Kuma has said.

The decision follows pressure from the public, calling on operators to reduce transport fares after President Akufo-Addo eased COVID-19 induced restrictions on the sector

The drop meant fare prices have increased by 5 percent in the aggregate since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, which has not augured well with some driver

“We are not in support of the 5 percent left for us,” the union’s Vice-Chairman, David Agboado, said in an interview with Accra based Citi News.

Some commercial drivers had spiked transport fares by 30% in clear disregard to the earlier directive to increase fares by 15%.

The new percentage reduction, they say will negatively impact their business.

“Now that the COVID-19 restrictions have somehow calmed and we should go to normalcy. So the 30 percent will be abnormal so we will reduce it but not to that 5 percent.”
