Being a wife and mother has slowed down my career, says Beverly Afaglo

Beverly Afaglo, a Ghanaian actress, revealed that although she is currently successful in the film industry, having a spouse and children had a negative impact on her profession.

Being a wife and mother has slowed down my career, says Beverly Afaglo

The mother of two recently discussed how she lost a position in a series because she had to fulfill her motherly responsibilities while speaking on Accra-based Kingdom FM.

Beverly remembered that her first child, who was six months old at the time, always requested a breastfeed before going to bed.

Her mother started contacting her after she worked late into the night on set to ask her to come home and breastfeed her daughter, who always breastfed before going to bed.

She explained that everyone on set began to protest since the production—which was supposed to wrap up at 5 o'clock—had continued, but she was more concerned about her kid.

Unfortunately, the producer called to inform her that she should stay at home and take care of her motherly responsibilities, and her part was cut from later episodes of the show.

"Getting married definitely slowed me down because some of the directors told me they couldn't cast me for certain roles I've previously played because I'm a wife," she said.

It is my obligation as an actress to act regardless of my marital status, therefore if I can flawlessly portray a character, I don't see a reason why I shouldn't be given the chance, she said, adding that she appreciates their respect.

The actress, who is known for her work in such films as "Single Six," "Turn Me On," "Bachelor's," "Equatorial Escape," "Girls Connection," "Northern Affair," and "Aloe Vera," claimed that she is not bothered by that because many female celebrities, including Beyonce and Ghanaian singer Becca, among others, have experienced similar circumstances.

"Look at Beyonce. Her team can promote her works when she releases them because of her strong brand, but we all know that this is not the Beyonce we knew before getting married since becoming a wife and mother changed her.

"The same thing happened with Becca; she used to be really noisy and everywhere. Since they are still single, your coworkers from the beginning will continue to work, but having a child also slows you down because you may take a year and a half off.

"And then by the time you get back to business, people have taken over your position," she said.
