Because streaming services don't have a category for hip life music, artists don't make it - Okyeame Kwame

Rapper and well-known hiplife singer from Ghana, Okyeame Kwame, has disclosed that young musicians avoid hiplife music since it is not available on streaming services.

He claimed that selling CDs was all they needed to do to promote themselves and earn money back in the day, before the advent of streaming services. These days, marketing and music are all about the money. "The days of selling CDs to promote our music and earn money are long gone," he remarked.

The rap doctor disclosed that the majority of streaming services feature genres including hip hop, Afrobeat, neo soul, soul, alternative music, African music, and experimental. This was stated in an interview on XZONE on TV XYZ. But it makes it challenging to market a genre which is not listed in their category of music on the streaming platforms.

Currently, iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon offer music. Hiplife is not a genre on any online sites. So, when you call it Hiplife, where will you sell your music? The only music available on streaming services is hip hop, Afrobeat, neo soul, soul, alternative music, African music, and experimental; there is no Hiplife. Thus, it's more like making a circular product while the shelves are all square shaped if your song doesn't fit into one of these categories," he continued.

Hiplife pioneers ought to have established a comparable platform for Ghanaian music, Okyeame Kwame said to host Afia Owusu, since this would have encouraged upcoming musicians to explore this genre.

Since these streaming platforms were made by humans, and since we are innovators, we ought to have developed a comparable one. The younger generation would have been interested in our genres if we had done the same with all Ghanaian genres, he stressed. However, the white guy will use his creations to promote his own.
