Bagbin declares NPP majority in Parliament
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

Ghana's Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has declared the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the majority caucus in the 8th Parliament of the country's  4th Republic.

The Speaker noted this, after reading out to the chamber, the declaration of intent, by the only Independent Candidate in the House, Mr Andrew Asiamah Amoako, to align with the NPP in chamber.

With the Fomena MP joining the NPP, the governing party has a seat more (138) than the NDC , after both parties secured 137 parliamentary seats in December 2020 polls.

The Mr Bagbin's announcement was greeted with cheers and shouts from the NPP caucus, that were seated at the right side of the Speaker.

Moments before declaring the NPP as the majority in the house, the Speaker expressed regret at the chaotic scenes in Parliament that preceded his election as Speaker.

He, however, did not make mention of a possible probe into the fracas, which included scuffles between Members of Parliament and the invasion of the chamber by armed security personnel.

Mr. Bagbin remarked that there was the “total absence of justification” for the security presence, among other occurrences.

He has already been urged and petitioned to cause an investigation into the incidents that marred the inauguration of the 8th Parliament.
