According to authorities in the state's Kushinagar district, the victims — all of them were women and children — were seated on a slab covering the well when it gave way and fell.

The 'Haldi' ritual, a Hindu tradition in which turmeric is applied to the bride and groom's faces for good luck, was attended by the wedding guests.
In a tweet on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the deaths as "heartbreaking."

"I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have died," he added. "I wish the injured person a quick recovery. The local government will assist in every manner it can."
According to CNN station News-18, Modi promised $2,662 in compensation for each victim's family and $665 for the injured.

According to News-18, Kushnigar district officials have offered an additional $5,323 to each of the victims' families.
