After a brown bear was beaten to death in Iran, a guy was arrested.

On Sunday, a man was detained when an endangered brown bear came into a town in northwestern Iran and was beaten to death.

According to state news agency Irna, residents of Kenazaq, in Ardabil province, chased and struck the animal before using a tractor to subdue it.

It was pinned to the ground by a tractor wheel, and its neck was tied to an earthmover according to a photo from the scene.

The bear had a shattered limb and pelvis, as well as damage to its spine, according to Irna.

Environmental protection officers took it to a wildlife center, where it died from its injuries, according to Irna.

The "terrible" crime, according to a local prosecutor, had upset the population.

According to the semi-official Isna news agency, the head of the judiciary in Ardabil said on Monday that the "culprit" had been apprehended without naming him.

It's unclear what prompted the locals to attack the animal if anything.

Habitat destruction, friction with humans, and hunting have all contributed to the decline of Iran's brown bear population, which is confined in the Zagros and Alborz mountain ranges.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which monitors the conservation status of over 100,000 species, considers them endangered.

An endangered Persian leopard was shot dead in the city of Ghaemshahr, north of Tehran, on Sunday after assaulting and injuring a police officer.

The animal was seen standing on the front side of a building, above a bank, before leaping to the ground and scattering bystanders, according to a video shared on social media.

The leopard was later apprehended and sent to a wildlife refuge but died as a result of the bullet wounds.

Officers from the Environmental Protection Agency are looking into whether the animal came into the city from a nearby forest or was kept illegally as a pet and then escaped.
