Afrobeats was formed by Wizkid and me, according to Nigerian music producer Samklef

Samklef, a well-known producer and musician from Nigeria, has claimed that he and Grammy Award winner Wizkid were responsible for coining the term "Afrobeats" to describe the country's music scene.

On Monday, September 11, Samlef wrote on his Twitter(X) account that Nigerian contemporary music lacked a genre and a name until he and Wizkid gave the music scene the moniker Afrobeats in 2010.

The singer of "Molowo Noni" claimed that although the Nigerian music pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is credited with inventing Afrobeats, Wizkid's rise to fame as a producer in the past ten years, which he helped to bring about, heralded a new era for the country's modern music industry.

They both deserve credit for the "magic" and name Afrobeats, the singer said.

Samklef posted a video of himself and Wizkid from the past on his X page on Monday.

“Meet the Nigerian two kids that created the afrobeats sound of today. As of 2009, Nigerian music had no title! Until these two created magic! 2010! Even the award categories in Nigeria were Best Hip Hop, Best R and B, Best Alternative Music and Best Reggae! There was nothing like Best Afrobeats! It was Wizkidayo who named it afrobeats! Know this and know peace! Fela created Afrobeat!” He wrote.

When Wizkid first gained fame in 2010, Samklef was one of his producers. In June 2011, Starboy's debut album, "Superstar," which featured smash songs produced by the music industry legend, was published.

After agreeing to a record deal with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.) in 2009, Wizkid gained Fame.

The Grammy-winning artist, who is regarded as one of the top musicians in Africa, has released numerous other successful songs since his breakthrough single, "Holla at Your Boy," the lead single from his debut studio album, "Superstar," was released in 2011.
