Musicians should learn about the business aspect of the industry, says Baba Sadiq

Sadiq Abdulai Abu, a businessman and the founder of the 3Music Awards, has suggested encouraging performers to explore into other aspects of the music industry as a backup plan when their singing career starts to wane.

Musicians should learn about the business aspect of the industry, says Baba Sadiq

He sees it as a last-ditch effort to assist musicians whose music careers may be nearing the end and serve as another source of income for them.

He asserted that because most musicians do not have alternate sources of income or a backup plan, when their careers start to falter, they have very few options to pursue and ways to make ends meet.

If you simply concentrate on singing, you risk having a very limited career as an artist. For perhaps, 10 or 15 years, you can't continually maintain your position at the top. Acquaint yourself with all the trades in the music industry as a way to continue to be relevant in the field.

"Ideally, as an artist, you should be aware of other aspects of the business so that you can easily rely on your expertise in those other fields as you near the end of your career.

"If you are a singer and you are no longer singing, you can have your hands on producing and managing other talents or you can count on other areas of the industry you have a flair for," he said.

He used the example of American singer and record producer Babyface as an artist who went to the bother of being knowledgeable about other facets of the music industry and is presently relying on that decision to earn millions as an executive record producer, despite the fact that he was no longer actively singing.

Babyface is a good illustration of this and has succeeded greatly. In addition to singing, he has dabbled in other aspects of the business and is now a reputable executive producer.

He now has something to cling to in the event that he decides against continuing his music career, which has been put on hiatus for some time. Richie Mensah, a local of Ghana, has achieved that goal. He has mastered every aspect of the business and is making the most of it," he said.
