African smokers are on the rise, according to a cigarette report.

According to a survey on global tobacco usage, while the number of smokers has decreased globally, it is increasing in Africa.

According to the Tobacco Atlas report, global smoking rates have decreased from 22.6 percent in 2007 to 19.6 percent in 2019. It was compiled by a consortium of public health organizations and US academics.

However, the authors of the analysis from the University of Illinois' Vital Strategies and Tobacconomics claimed that sections of the world experiencing population increase, such as Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, and the western Pacific, have growing numbers of smokers.

The frequency was rising among adults and young people in at least ten African countries.

“The industry is still preying on emerging economies in ways that will lock in harms for a generation or more," the Reuters news agency quotes report author Jeffrey Drope as saying.
