Nine (9) passengers including a six-month-old baby have been confirmed dead in a fatal crash at the Akyem Apedwa stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway in the East Akim Municipality in the Eastern region of Ghana.

According to Suhum Police Command, the accident happened on August 21, 2021, at about 6:40 pm after a reckless overtaking by a Benz minibus driver.

The Police command opined, that the crash occurred when the suspect Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus driver, yet to be identified, with registration number GT 7394-14 with passengers on board from Nkawkaw towards Accra direction on reaching Apedwa pig farm junction on the Accra-Kumasi highway,  made an unsafe overtaken without observing traffic from the opposite direction.

According to the police, the vehicle, therefore, crashed with a DAF trailer truck with registration number 2459 T1 03 for the head and 2458 T1 03 for the rear.

The driver of the trailer who was coming from Accra direction has been identified as Yakuba Sanogo and age 34. 

Six (6) female passengers including about six months old baby and three (3) males died on the spot.

The bodies were deposited at Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

The remaining victims were rushed to the same Hospital and others to Kibi Government hospital for treatment.

The road has since been cleared for the free flow of traffic a few hours after the unfortunate incident.
