Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Honourable John Abu Jinapor has disclosed that the 2021 tree planting exercise has cost the country some whopping GHS12,796,615.

The Minister was answering questions on the floor of Parliament filed by the Bole Bamboo Member of Parliament, Honourable Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, the Member of Parliament for Tempane as to the state of some 5 million trees planted on the 11 June 2021 which commemorated the Green Ghana Day.

According to the Minister, the total amount is an accumulation of the cost of individual trees that were planted which include 190,099 seedlings of cashew which cost GHS950,495,  mango GHS380,680 representing 76136 seedlings, coconut of 108,085 seedlings at the cost of GHS540,425, avocado representing GHS540,425 for 901 seedlings and citrus of 18,147 seedlings at the amount of GHS90735.

The rest are 60,000 bamboo seedlings at the cost of 300,000 and 1,000 Shea at the cost of GHS5,000 with a seedling costing GHS5.00. In all, about 17 different tree seedlings were planted across the country. He was upbeat that the majority would survive to gradually replace those who have cut.

HonorableJinapor explained that on August 2, 2021, as captured in columns 223 to 232 of the Parliamentary Hansard, the Forestry Commission produced a total of one million and ten thousand seedlings from the nurseries of the Forest Services Division, and six thousand seedlings were received as donations. He said since the target was to plant a minimum of 5 million,408,534 seedlings were procured at the cost of GHS12,796,615.

The Minister however said that the maiden edition of the Green Ghana Day saw over GHS7,000,000 trees ed across the country, exceeding the set target of 5,000,000 trees. "Mr. Speaker, field assessment conducted by the National Investigations Bureau(NIB) and the Forestry Commission indicate that about eighty percent of the trees have survived and are doing very well", he noted.

The Green Ghana initiative is aimed at creating enhancement. "With the climate crisis reaching its tipping point, forests, also known as the "Lungs of the Earth", have a crucial role to play in the sustainability of the planet and human survival.
