The Assembly members in the country have called on the central government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Local Government Authority to change their existing mindset and adopt new measures by way of giving them the monthly transportation allowances rather than than the motorbikes provided to them as means to argument their transportation challenges.
According to the Assembly Members, they have noticed that the motorbikes provided to them by the Ministry of the Local Government and Rural Development are rather the death traps that were 'killing them every day.'
The Assembly Members made these revelations when they were discussing their challenges at the 2022 Ashanti Regional Delegates Conference of the National Association of Local Author of Ghana (NALAG) recently.
The event was held at Akumadan in the Offinso North District under the theme; "Transforming Local Economies for Inclusive and Sustainable Recovery."
The aggrieved Assembly Members noted that their services or roles at the grassroots with the Unit Committees, Urban/Area Councils, and the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District assemblies are the basis of "our decentralization or Local Governance system.
They lamented that they played the leading for the development of their electoral areas but they are the worst treated local government officials in this country.
They pointed out that it is high time leadership of the country provided them with enough logistics, especially transportation.
The assembly members described the government's motorbikes given to them over the years as death traps killing many of them.
Reacting to these calls by the Assembly Members, the General Secretary of NALAGMr. Kokoro Amankwaa said the members of the leadership of the Association have been lobbying with the government to procure cars for assembly members to be able to go about their duties safely and was optimistic in the coming years this appeal will yield positive results.
Earlier in his welcome address, the DCE for Offinso North in the Ashanti Region, Mr. David Kwasi Asare Boakye popularly called Adwumawura, who the host thanked NALAG for choosing Offinso North for this year's conference.
He called for stronger collaboration between Assembly Members and MMDCEs irrespective of their political differences to achieve the common goal of development.
Finally, the newly elected Ashanti Regional Representative of NALAG, who doubles as the Presiding Member for Sekyere South District Assembly, Mr. Michael Opoku was grateful for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work tirelessly to improve the lives of Assembly Members.
