Presiding Member of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Stephen Ofori has made known that Assembly members are not in possession of food stuffs and provisions provided by government and so people should stop regarding them for being in charge of food distribution.

The President of Ghana on Sunday, April 5, 2020 directed the Ministry of Finance to send to Parliament the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP), whose objective is to protect households to provide food up to four hundred thousand (40,000) individuals and homes in the lock down areas.

Per the directives of Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, the food distribution “the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Local Government and Rural Development, and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), working with MMDCEs and the faith-based organizations” will be in charge of providing food for up to four hundred thousand (400,000) individuals and homes in the affected areas of the restrictions.

“This begun in Accra today, and will begin in Kumasi tomorrow. It will come in the form of dry food packages and hot meals, and will be delivered to vulnerable communities in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa,” the president said.

Briefing the press at a conference organized by the Assembly members within the Kumasi Metro on Tuesday, April 6, 2020, Mr. Stephen Ofori addressed that the directive of the president was towards the leaders of the faith based organizations and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to provide for the poor.

He dismissed the involvement of any district assembly member and called for their names to be suspended in what they have no clue of.

“After the speech by the president, the assembly members in their various locations went through a tough time when citizens kept knocking at our doors seeking for foods.

“We are not responsible for food distribution, besides whatever foodstuffs transported to Kumasi came with orders to involve leaders of faith based organization and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) plus a few government officials.

The mandate by the president does not involve us hence the need to create awareness that we (assembly members) not accountable to the food allocation.

“I learnt that, every electoral area is entitled to 120 bags of rice out of the 5000 pieces (5kilo). Meanwhile every electoral area has a population of 7000 inhabitants, which makes it very tough in times like this,” he added.
