The residents of Alata, a farming community in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso- Bekwai Municipality of the western north region, are passionately calling on the government for swift actions against the activities of illegal miners in the area.

The situation according to the residents, is polluting their only source of drinking water. Speaking in an interview with the press the residents expressed their disgust at the fast rate of destruction which has left the river polluted.

The river which takes its source from Surano, the residents say has been damaged beyond measure therefore blaming the Municipal assembly for not taking action against such impunity.

The assembly member, Hon Offin emphasized that, he has on several occasions petitioned the authorities for support to fight the activities of the illegal miners but has not received any favourable response.

He called on the authorities to as a matter of urgency mitigate the devastating effects since it has become difficult to access potable water.

The situation, he noted is dire therefore calling for prompt attention from the powers that be.
