Senior staff in universities in Ghana (SSAUoG) have served notice to embark on a strike, starting Monday, October 19, 2020, as part of demands for better conditions of service.

They made the announcement at a press conference in Accra Friday [October 16, 2020].

“Pursuant to the ultimatum, which was copied to the National Labour Commission, and government’s insensitivity to our plight, we hereby declare the withdrawal of our services with effect from Monday, 19th October 2020.

“All members of the Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSAUoG) are required to lay down their tools and hoist red flags across all campuses.” The National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, Mr Abdul-Majeed Yussif said.

He explained that the government has shown bad faith in ongoing negotiations concerning their conditions of service.

They are demanding that the government pay their market premium and second-tier pension arrears of between 2010 and 2016.

Mr Abdul-Majeed Yussif also mentioned the migration of the payroll of public universities onto the controller and accountant general’s payroll system as one of the examples of their concern.

“We reiterate our call to government to stop the subtle moves to do so. Instead, we strongly advocate for special dispensation akin to that granted to the security services and other public institutions with respect to salary administration.”

Meanwhile, members of the Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) are not going to be part of the latest industrial action by the university staff.
