UN peacekeepers find mass graves in east DR Congo

Numerous dead were discovered in mass graves in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo by UN forces.

The finding follows a string of assaults by armed groups in the Ituri region.

Farhan Haq, a spokesman for the UN, reported the bodies of 42 people, including women and children, had been found in Nyamamba village and that seven additional men had been found in Mbogi village.

Following allegations of attacks by Codeco militias, the peacekeepers started conducting patrols in the region.

The Lendu farming community, which has long been at odds with Hema herders, provides the majority of the group's fighters.
