Tunisia opposition leader jailed for a year

The leader of the Ennahda party, who has been a vocal opponent of President Kais Saied, has been in custody since last month after being taken into custody on suspicion of attempting to undermine state security and inciting violence.

Defending the accusations as politically motivated, Mr. Ghannouchi declined to appear before the court. He was given a sentence in his absence on Monday.

Leading opponents of Mr. Saied, who seized full administrative powers over two years ago, have been arrested in a wave this year.

Twenty political rivals and individuals, including former ministers and business leaders, have been detained since February.

International condemnation of Mr. Ghannouchi's incarceration with others last month came from the US, the EU, and rights organizations.
