Their arrest was deemed "unacceptable" by President Kais Saied, who demanded their release amid a public outcry.

Youssef Chelbi and Dhia Nsir, who are 27 and 26, produced a video on Facebook and TikTok criticizing how the police handle those who are being detained and the laws prohibiting drug usage.

The song was widely shared by Tunisians after their detention provoked online condemnation.

Leading opponents of Mr. Saied, who has ruled by decree since assuming power in 2021, have been arrested in a wave this year.

Dozens of journalists protested against restrictive anti-terror measures they claim are meant to intimidate the media on Thursday.

They waved signs outside the national journalists union's headquarters, stating that press freedom is essential to liberty.
