The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given reasons behind the construction of the National Cathedral.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, the pursuit is to show gratitude to God for preserving the life of Ghanaians since independence inspite of the challenging circumstances in the sub-region. He also made known that the infrastructure will help merge the Christian community who contribute to 71 percent of the Ghanaian population and help to promote national unity.

“There are some people who still ask the question, why a National Cathedral. Let me give you three reasons,” the Nana Addo uttered.

“Since gaining our freedom and independence from the British and colonial power, nearly 63 years ago in 1957, Ghana has been spared civil wars, famines and epidemics.

We certainly are no better than the other nations in our neighborhood who have been confronted with these challenges but I believe it is by the Grace of God that we have been preserved and sustained, and the construction of the Cathedral will be an act of thanksgiving to the Almighty for His Blessing, Favor and Mercy on our Nation.

“Secondly, 71 percent of the Ghanaian people adhere to the Christian religion grouped under the various persuasion of the Christian faith. The inter-denominational National Cathedral will help unify the Christian community and help promote National unity and social cognition,” he said.

The President further brought to light that the iconic landmark is also a fulfilment of a promise he made to God after losing out the 2008 and 2016 Presidential elections. He addressed that he made a pledge to the Almighty that if He grants power in the hands of the New Patriotic Party, he will build a Cathedral to His Glory.

“I made a pledge to the Almighty God. If he was gracious enough to grant my party, the New Patriotic Party, I eventually in the 2016 elections after two unsuccessful attempts, I will help to build a Cathedral to His Glory and Honor and I have to redeem this pledge,” he spoke.

Nana was the guest speaker at the Launch of the National Cathedral and Fund Raising Campaign, which took place on Thursday, January 30th 2020 at the Church of Pentecost, A.T Nartey Temple, Bantama Kumasi. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was in the United States capital of Washington D.C on February 8, 2019, to launch the fundraising for the building after the State House witnessed the Ghanaian version of the unveiling through which photos revealing the design of the cathedral were disclosed.

He called on the Christian Community to support him to mobilize the needed supplies to put up the building.

“I need your help to do so. The cathedral will not just be another national monument adorning the skyline of Accra. It will be the running point of the Christian community to come together to worship, to worship and pray and to promote deep national conversation of the role of faith in building our beloved Ghana.

“That is why we are trying to mobilize the Christian community to join us in partnership to raise the needed resources to build the cathedral. Just as God prospered the prophet Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, I am prayerful that he will prosper us and make us succeed in our endeavors.

The president made the announcement on the project on 6th March 2017, during Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary. In 2018, during the 61st Independence celebration, he unveiled the iconic design by the world acclaimed Ghanaian architect, David Adjaye for the cathedral and on the eve of the Nation’s 63rd Independence Anniversary on 6th March 2020, construction will begin.
