Jurgen Klopp insists that Liverpool remain focused on the work still ahead of them after grinding out a 3-2 victory over West Ham United on Monday night.

Second-half goals by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane helped leaders Liverpool claim a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over West Ham United to match Manchester City's top-flight record of 18 consecutive wins.

Liverpool went in front after nine minutes, Georginio Wijnaldum heading in from Trent Alexander-Arnold's whipped cross.

Issa Diop equalised three minutes later, heading in from Robert Snodgrass' corner before substitute Pablo Fornals swept in from Declan Rice's centre on 54 minutes to put West Ham ahead.

Salah levelled 14 minutes later, with his low shot going through the hands and legs of Lukasz Fabianski, before Mane tapped in with nine minutes remaining to turn the match around.

A 21st successive home win ties the record in the top flight, set by Liverpool's 1972 side managed by Bill Shankly.

According to the German, the numbers are incredible but it doesn’t matter as the next game is always the focus if a better history can be written.

“A couple of years ago, three or four, maybe in the beginning, I said we want to write our own stories, we want to create our own history,” Klopp said.

“Obviously, the boys took really seriously what I said there and that’s all cool – but just not too important in the moment. It’s so special, the numbers are incredible, so difficult. We said it a couple of times, we spoke about wonderful games, brilliant games, we spoke about hard games, difficult games.

“Tonight was difficult obviously, so the number of wins you can only have if you win all of these games: the difficult ones, the easy ones – if there ever was one – the brilliant ones and the rougher, more grumpy ones. In the end, that’s what counts,” he added.

Liverpool will visit Vicarage Road on Saturday, February 29, 2020 to play Watford who lie in the relegation zone with 24 points. Klopp maintains that playing such a club requires one of the best performances and his role as manager requires him to prepare his boys for what awaits them.

“We all know it’s very special, but in the moment we are really just in the situation and want to recover and prepare for the next one.

“The next opponent is really waiting and wants to fight us, the whole stadium at Watford will go for us, that’s completely normal.

“There will be a special atmosphere and we have to be 100 per cent ready. I saw the boys tonight, they are ready to fight and as long as we are really ready to fight, nobody should worry, but we still have a lot of work to do,” he added.

The Reds are 22 points clear of second-placed Man City.
