Sweden extradites a Rwandan genocide suspect.

A Rwandan man has been extradited to Kigali by Swedish authorities on charges of genocide committed when he was a university student.

The Rwandan prosecutor's office said it met with Jean-Paul Micomyiza on Wednesday and thanked Sweden for its "support to the fight against impunity."

In November 2020, Mr. Micomyiza, 50, was arrested in Sweden on a Rwandan arrest warrant. Last December, he lost an appeal against his extradition.

He has been a resident of Sweden for over a decade.

He faces genocide charges for his claimed role in looking for and identifying Tutsis to be slaughtered during the 1994 genocide when he was 22 years old.

He was a student at the National University of Rwanda in his birthplace of Butare, in south Rwanda, at the time.

Mr. Micomyiza has remained silent about the charges he is facing in Rwanda.
