According to the Daily Maverick online site, which cites official papers, the South African government is negotiating a $52 million (£42.5 million) sponsorship agreement with Premier League team Tottenham Hotspurs.
The agreement is intended to promote South Africa as a vacation destination, but there are worries that the nation may be supporting a wealthy football team, according to the journal.
Through the marketing division SA Tourism, the terms of the three-year agreement are "on the verge of being finalized."
The arrangement is anticipated to be announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on February 10 at his State of the Nation Address, according to the source, although neither the presidency nor the minister of tourism have made any statements as of yet.
A quoted tourist expert criticized the agreement, calling the return on investment "ludicrous."
