Ramos celebrate goal from the spot against Atalanta

Real Madrid are through to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in three years after a 4-1 aggregate against Atalanta.

Los Blancos were 3-1 winners following strikes by Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Asensio.

Atalanta began to venture forward as Nacho made a solid block before a corner saw Djimsiti fire over.

Vinicius kept causing the Atalanta defence problems every time he was on the ball. The Brazilian was brushed to the ground inside the area after a long sprint, but there was minimal contact and the referee played on.

Karim Benzema put the hosts ahead in the 34-minute, assisted by Luka Modric. The Croatian intercepted a loose ball from Sportiello and laid it on a plate for Benzema who couldn’t miss. He opened the scores and Los Blancos were 2-0 on aggregate up.

The second half was cheerful for Real Madrid as they kept possession of play and dictated the pace of the game for Atalanta.

Vinicius was a real threat to the Atalanta defence as he kept driving them on with his skills. In the 52-minute, the 20-year old almost doubled the advantage of Real Madrid when he dribbled past anyone who crossed his path yet placed the ball wide after getting closer to post.

Sergio Ramos doubled the lead of Real Madrid 150minutes into the second half after Vinicius was tripped in the yard box. The captain stepped up to take the penalty and he made no mistake, to the keeper's right to give Madrid a 3-0 aggregate scoreline.

Luis Muriel pulled one back for the visitors from a very clever free-kick to the top corner of the Madrid net yet it took three minutes for substitute, Marco Asensio to register his name on the scoresheet which quenched Atalanta’s hopes of a comeback. Los Blancos burst forward and Lucas Vázquez got to the edge of the penalty area and teed up Asensio, whose low shot beat Sportiello and restored the two-goal lead on the night.

It ended din favour of Madrid; 3-1 and 4-1 on aggregate.
