The enormous 55.22 carat stone was found in a mine in Mozambique last year.

It was 101 carats when uncut. Its nickname is "Estrela de Fura," which translates as "Star of Fura" in Portuguese. The firm that mined the stone is indicated by the name.

More than five carat polished rubies are quite uncommon.

The stone was hailed as a "once-in-a-lifetime" treasure by Sotheby's, which held the sale.

A pink diamond brought in a record amount at the same auction.

The exquisite purplish-pink stone, weighing 10.5 carats and coming from Botswana, sold for slightly under $35 million.
