Pay us or we strike – KMA labourers
Kumasi Mayor
The aggrieved labourers in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have threatened to lay down their tools if their two months salary is not paid.
Some of them who spoke to SARKODIE PEPRAH, said despite channeling their grievances to the authorities of the KMA, nothing has been done about it.
One of the aggrieved KMA members said: “We don’t live in town, yes, some of us don’t live in town, and have to spend about GHS20 daily on transportation. Because of the unpaid arrears, what some do is pick a vehicle to a point and walk to work, this is not good. We have families to cater for that’s why we are demanding our money.
Another male cleaner explained their plight and demanded the payment of their arrears.
“Pay us so we can go home and sit down. If you don’t pay us how do we get to work?" he asked.
"There’s no money, how do you come to work? How do you pick a car to work? How much are we paid? GHS500! How do we take care of ourselves and families? When the month ends pay us,” he demanded.
The labourers who are responsible for cleaning weeding the Metropolis as well as the offices of the KMA indicated that life has been unbearable for them, hence, they want their salaries paid.
The cleaners have, therefore, threatened that they will not work effective today Tuesday, 13 June 2023, if they do not receive their two months' salary arrears.
