Over 4000 Children Rescued From Streets in Accra – Gender Minister

Ghana’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, says the Ministry has moved to rescue over 4,809 children from the streets of Accra.

According to the Minister, twenty one of them who are nationals of Niger have been repatriated to their home country as of 2018.

She was answering to questions on the floor of Parliament today [11th June, 2020] asked by Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya Sekyere East.

The Minister said some children were rescued on the streets around the Marina Mall and Opeibea areas all in Airport City and sent to a social welfare shelter at Madina.

She noted that “some of these children [however] continue to reappear on our streets.”

Due to this, Cynthia Mamle Morrison said the Ministry “together with the Office of National Security, are engaging with more stakeholders to develop and implement a more sustainable strategy to permanently address the issue.”

Madama Morrison suggested that with adequate funding, the Ministry will ensure that every citizen has improved access to quality social services and livelihood activities to reflect both international and national obligations such as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), most importantly Goals 1, 2 and 5.
