Nigeria's Chioma Onyekwere wins gold in discus

Chioma Onyekwere made history by becoming the first woman from Nigeria to win the gold medal in the discus throw at the Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old, who is also the African Games and African Athletics champion, made her debut at the competition by throwing her season's best of 61.70m in her fourth attempt to overtake Britain's Jade Lally for the lead.

After South Africa's Elizna Naude in the 2006 Melbourne Games, the US-based engineer became the first another African girl to win the gold in the history of the event.

With a throw of 56.99 meters, her countryman Obiageri Amaechi took home the bronze medal.

The two medals are Nigeria's first at the games this year.

Chioma said to BBC Sport Africa that she was astounded by the triumph and that the moment has come for Africa to triumph on the international scene.

"It's incredible. Our first Commonwealth exists now. It's incredible to compete in our first Commonwealth Games, place on the podium, honorably represent Nigeria and achieve season-best or nearly season-best results.

So, it's a fantastic achievement. This is a fantastic testament to our season "She spoke.
