The new Kejetia market in the Ashanti Region has recorded its first fire incident on Tuesday night, May 11, 2021.

According to a Member of the Traders leadership, Nana Prempeh, the fire incident was not as penetrating as the former which occurs at the Central Market and other market places.

He narrated that a single shop was affected following the owners’ decision to make an extra lock by employing a welder to secure her place.

Per his words, the amount of current consumed by the welder triggered the fire yet, the fire alarm system installed in the new market prompted the security men to control the incident.

“The fire started at 6:25 pm thereabout. We saw the smoke rising and the fire alarm system was activated so everyone was alert of the incident. The security men tracked where the smoke was coming from and identified it from a single shop.

“The owner had employed a welder to make an extra lock in front of her shop so the welder's wires triggered the fire,” he added.

Nana Prempeh explained to Soireenews that even if no one was available, the water sprinklers would have taken care of the situation but the unfortunate thing was that an Allocco board has been used to cover the space of the sprinklers by the shop owner which prevented the water from accessing the shop.

He assured that apart from that, everything is under control and the former attitude of looting by unknown people has all been resolved.

“In order not to parade most of the people into the market for others to take advantage, the gates were closed from the time of the fire till this morning where shop owners can report to work and take care of their goods.”

The security and fire service personnel were being applauded for the pleasant work on Tuesday night.
