NDC Accuses KMA Mayor Of Banning Pragya Operations In NPP Voters Dominated Areas In Kumasi Metropolis

NDC Accuses KMA Mayor Of Banning Pragya Operations In NPP Voters Dominated Areas In Kumasi Metropolis
Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Samuel Pyne has been accused of scheming to ban the commercial operations of Aboboya and Pragyia (tricycles) in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) voters dominated communities like Bantama, Kejetia, Asafo, Adum, Pampaso and Roman Ridge in the prime parts of Kumasi's central business district.

However, the Atwima Nwabiagya South Deputy Constituency Organiser for the National Democratic (NDC), Mr. Rasheed Abdu who spilled the beans on matter hinted that the Kumasi mayor has intentionally allowed tricycles business in the areas like Asawase, Aboabo, Tafo, Mossi Zongo.

According to him, these areas known to be places of where the majority of the supporters and sympathisers of the NDC are leaving in Kumasi metropolis.

He reaffirmed that the KMA has allowed the  tricycle/Pragya businesses in the in Asawase, Aboabo, Tafo, Mossi Zongo and other areas because the assembly thought that it was  the NDC sympathisers, predominantly northerners who are majority of commercial riders of the tricycles in these aforementioned communities.

He mentioned that the Assembly didn't care whether the riders in these unrestricted areas were involved in tricycles motor accidents hence the Assembly current selective actions.
"If the the transport sub-committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly headed by Kumasi mayor who is working for the NPP government were saying that they are stopping operations of the use of tricycles in the certain restricted areas because its commercial activities were causing motor traffic incidents and the same restriction order done in the areas NDC supporters dominated areas like Asawase, Aboabo, Tafo, Mossi Zongo in Kumasi metropolis, the questions l am asking are that are these people leaving in these unrestricted communities in Kumasi metropolis also not human beings," he rhetorically asked.
"We have disappointed in the Mayor of
KMA, he said, stating that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly directives to ban the use of tricycles/ Pragya is politically incorrect, adding that it will increase robbery cases.
He said, the KMA must issue proper measures to ensure there are strict rules binding the Pragya riders than absolute banning them from operating.
He added that the ban will increase rapid unemployment rate and insecurities in the metropolis.
The astute politician expressed his worry over how some parts of Kumasi are not affected by the said directives but only places where the NDC have their stronghold, believing it's political motivated.
"I think this is political motivated. I will plead with the KMA mayor and the other stakeholders to reconsider their decisions and allow them to operate under strict conditions, since banning the Pragya/tricycles can bring a lot of brouhaha and insecurities in the metropolis," he noted.
It would be recalled the transport sub-committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has proposed a restriction on Aboboya and Pragyia (tricycles) in the prime parts of Kumasi's central business district.
According to Afia Konadu, the Public Relations Officer of the KMA, the new measure aims to alleviate congestion in the central business district.
Speaking on Kessben FM, she confirmed that the proposal has been accepted by the General Assembly of the KMA.
Initially scheduled to be implemented on June 15, 2023, the implementation has been delayed due to additional engagements that need to be addressed.
Konadu emphasized that after conducting the necessary stakeholder consultations, an official announcement regarding the restriction will be made.
The move by KMA comes after the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council led by the Regional Minister, Henry Quartey announced a ban on tricycles on Highways within the national capital.
The ban is aimed at ensuring compliance enforcement of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180) came into effect on November 1, 2021.
