Romelu Lukaku has admitted that he was in a “deep hole” at Manchester United and the only way to redeem his career was to join Inter Milan to prove his worth.

The Belgian star believes joining Inter Milan was a turning point in his career after a frustrating season at Old Trafford having joined from Everton.

Manchester United signed striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton for an initial £75m on a five-year contract in 2017 but he couldn’t live up to expectations and was sold to the Serie A side for a fee of £73m in 2019.

He became a player to watch in Italy scoring 23 goals in 36 matches in his first season in Serie A  and 24 in 36 matches in his second, helping the Bue and Black Stripes to win the Italian League.

Following his reunion with Chelsea, the striker has expressed that Thomas Tuchel's side was his ultimate dream and there was no way he could join any other club.

"I was only going to leave Inter Milan for Chelsea," Lukaku told HLN. "Kids love Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United. And Chelsea for me, everyone knows what Chelsea means to me.

"If they ask me, why would I say no? I only realized that Chelsea was serious at the third offer. So it was €100m (£85m), then it was €105m (£90m), and then it went to €110m (£94m). Then I knew, this is truly serious.

"I was in a deep hole at Man United. I didn't want to go behind Inter's back.

"So after training, I went to [Inter boss Simone] Inzaghi's office. I didn't want to ruin the atmosphere because I was no longer with my head in Milan. So I asked him: please find an agreement."

Lukaku has a goal to his name after two matches in the Premier League.
