Edouard Mendy seems to have cemented his spot as the new Chelsea first-choice goalkeeper following a clean sheet in the Blues Champions League game with Sevilla on Tuesday.

The Goalkeeper since his arrival from Rennes for a fee of £22m kept his first clean sheet in his debut Premier League game against Crystal Palace before his injury whiles on international assignment.

His absence gave Kepa Arrizabalaga an opportunity to be featured last Saturday against the Saints but his self-assurance was denied, letting in three goals following a howler which led to Southampton’s second.

Asked if the Spaniard has been retired from the first choice role, Lampard encouraged the need to keep competition alive in every team, an approach he believes will keep Chelsea succeeding.

"I said when he came in it was good for competition. We knew his qualities and he's showing them already. But that always remains something that is up for grabs, so that is why you have competition at clubs. The way he is playing I'm very happy."

He confirmed that at the moment, Mendy will lead the goalkeeping department after an improved performance over Kepa and Caballero.

“The way he has played in the three games since being here, he's played very well... so at the minute, yes."
