Kenya's opposition calls off anti-government protests

In order to allow for bipartisan talks on the creation of the nation's electoral commission, Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga has canceled demonstrations scheduled for Monday.

President William Ruto asked him to call them off and enable for dialogue, and Mr. Odinga spoke an hour later.

The opposition has been holding demonstrations twice a week in opposition to rising living expenses, the creation of a new electoral committee, and the validity of the president's election from the previous year.

President Ruto agreed to one requirement and suggested a bipartisan discussion in parliament about the electoral commission's reorganization.

Mr. Odinga acknowledged the president's calls for dialogue in his speech and emphasized the significance of Mr. Ruto's comments.

But he issued a warning that if the talks failed, demonstrations would start up again in a week.
