It wasn’t pretty at times, but England got the job done against Albania winning 2-0 in their World Cup qualifier.

Harry Kane and Mason Mount were on the scoresheet for Gareth Southgate’s side on Sunday afternoon.

It broke a streak of six games without scoring for the national side for the Tottenham striker, a run stretching back to 2019.

There had been concerns expressed about the pitch at the Air Albania Stadium and it certainly seemed to slow down England as they looked to build their attacks.

The opening half an hour was short of chances and it was the hosts who had the best opportunity to break the deadlock – Mytro Uzuni lacked composure when played in on goal as he rifled his shot over goalkeeper Nick Pope’s crossbar when he should have done much better.

Despite a slow start, England took the lead before the interval.

Mason Mount teed-up Luke Shaw, whose fine cross was headed home by captain Kane, who ended a six-game barren run for his country to put the visitors ahead.

His last for England came against Kosovo in November 2019 – 497 days ago. Meanwhile, Shaw’s assist came in his first England appearance since 2018.

Kane should have doubled the lead shortly afterwards but could only hit the crossbar as he turned a Raheem Sterling cross goalwards from close range.

Southgate would have been pleased to get his side in at half-time with a lead after a tricky opening spell, with Kane’s 33rd England goal separating the teams.
